EVAP Leak Detection: Working alongside the EVAP purge valve and vent valve, the sensor feeds real-time pressure data to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to detect leaks within the evaporative emission control system.
Pressure Balancing: Prevents over-pressurization (which can cause fuel or vapor leakage) and excessive vacuum buildup (which can cause atmospheric pressure to implode the tank).
Operating Principle: Built around a micromachined silicon diaphragm. Internal tank pressure variations cause mechanical deformation of the diaphragm, altering the resistance across a Wheatstone bridge. This produces a linear voltage output signal proportional to the tank pressure.
Common Symptoms of Failure
When the sensor degrades, fails, or drifts out of calibration, the following symptoms typically occur:
Check Engine Light (MIL) On: The ECU detects abnormal pressure data or a signal out-of-range condition, triggering the dashboard warning light and storing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) such as P0451 or P0452.
Fuel Cap Hard to Open / Vacuum Hiss: A faulty sensor can prevent proper vacuum relief, resulting in a strong suction sound or excessive physical resistance when removing the gas cap.
Increased Fuel Consumption & Reduced Engine Power: Incorrect pressure readings distort the ECU's air-fuel ratio calculations and fuel trim adjustments, causing higher fuel consumption, rough idling, or sluggish acceleration.
Failure Causes & Diagnostic Recommendations
In addition to internal electronic degradation, external factors-such as a loose gas cap, an aged filler neck seal, a stuck EVAP valve, or cracked/chafed vacuum hoses-can also trigger low/high pressure trouble codes.
During servicing, always begin with a preliminary visual inspection to verify that the gas cap seal is intact and the vacuum lines are free of damage or leaks. If no external leaks are found, use a diagnostic scan tool to monitor real-time sensor live data and verify whether the signal voltage falls within factory specifications. If the sensor is confirmed faulty, replace it with an OEM-spec component to ensure precision measurement, then clear the trouble codes and conduct a road test.
